about

About four or five years ago I decided I didn't want to make "fun" rap music anymore. I was going through a pretty tough time in my life. I had just got divorced, my life felt like it was falling apart, my bipolar was at its absolute worst, and I was struggling with some pertty heavy duty problems with codependency and addiction. I think it may have been may literal rock bottom, and it drove me away from wanting to make "fun" music for quite a long time.

But for the past year or so, I've been slowly crawling out of my shell and secretly working on a new album's worth of tracks under a pseudonym, on a private soundcloud, only sharing them with a few close friends. But after spending the past week or so listening to these, I think maybe it's kind of jumpstart the old engine. I dunno if there will be more records after this one? Or more weird projects like Merostomata? The future is mysterious. But I do know that I feel like I owe it to the people who enjoy my music to get this out there, nine new songs -- never before heard except for by my closet friends -- that really feel like a big step back into the light out of some very dark few years of my life.

I sorta feel like my production and lyricism game has improved substantially, and I've moved pretty far away from the depressing dirge-rap i was making towards the end of my last run. I think there's a little more honesty here when it comes to embracing the dorkiness inherent to my personality (yes, there are a couple wrestling references) and a lot less tracks about self-pity.

If you ask me, this shit is high-energy, fun, and has a lot of dancefloor bangers and punchlines instead of the somber tones of a middle-aged white dude trying to emulate teenaged soundcloud rappers. If you've ever liked any song I've done that wasn't "The Bus Is Late", you'll dig this. Enjoy, if you please.

(P.S. I'm pretty just referring to myself as my real name now, J.W. Friedman, but I didn't want to start a new page so I figure I'll just do it Bobby Diggs style and have like eighty nicknames. Call me Doc ya'll. Or don't. Not in front of Redman.)
